The typical residencies which are completed before a hematology/oncology or hematology specialization are pediatrics and internal medicine. There are other general residency programs that can be completed if neither of these are a preference. </P> <P>Hematologists responsibilities and duties include the diagnosis of patients that are referred to them by their primary physician. The hematologist will discuss the conditions prognosis, the best ways to treat and deal with it, with the family and the patient. Knowledge of the cells in the body fluids, blood marrow and the blood itself is required to become a hematologist. Clinical treatment and laboratory research may be concentrated on to find new ways to treat the numerous blood disordered diseases. Studying the makeup of the diseases, the effect on the cells and the way the diseases react to the various treatments can lead to new treatments. </P> <P>Hematologists should have laboratory experience in order to draw the necessary samples, perform and accurately interpret the test results. Proper interpretation of test results is important to ensure that the correct diagnosis and treatments are given to patients. The position requires a high level of skill and comfort in a laboratory setting. Explaining the details of treatments, risks associated with the treatments and the potential outcomes to allow the patient to be a part of their treatment decisions is important. Hematologists can focus on patients or research, some choose to do both. It takes a great deal of hard work and dedication in order to become a hematologist, and the job duties are numerous.</P>
