What is a Good Skin Care Routine Best Products

What is a good skin care routine? We asked the leading authority in the field of cosmetic dermatology, Dr. Simon Ourian for his advice. After all, his clients include celebrities like the Kardashian-Jenner family, Victoria's Secret supermodels, Hollywood actors and musicians who all rely on his physical treatments and products.

“The fact is that applying your skin care products in the proper order ensures that your skin receives the full benefits of each product, especially since some products are designed to penetrate the skin and others to protect it. If you don’t apply products in the specific correct order, you will not see the best results from your skin care treatment.”

Guide to Layer Your Skin Care Products

A simple guideline to follow is to apply your skincare products with the thinnest consistency to thickest, or from liquid to cream. But, as mentioned above, you also want to first use the products with the ingredients that are most important to penetrate into the skin, such as antioxidants in serums. Then, apply the products that need to lay on the top of the skin, such as emollients.

>> DAYTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE

Your morning routine should focus on protection from the sun, pollution and other destructive elements. For this reason, one should avoid peel pads and treatment products, like retinol, until the night. “My patients' number one challenge is sun damage. It destroys collagen and skin tone, causes wrinkles and discoloration and generally makes people look older. It’s the underlying reason that most of my patients come see me, whether they’re aware of it or not,” stated Dr. Ourian.

  • CLEANSER - One of the first things to do in commencing your morning skincare routine is splashing your face with warm water or a gentle face cleanser designed for your skin type.
  • TONER - While many people choose to skip toners as some are harsh and could irritate the skin, many quality toners don’t do that. While they don’t physically “shrink” pores, the new breed of toners can serve multiple purposes, for example in delivering antioxidants, vitamin B derivatives and even toning acids. However, if you have not used a toner before and your skin looks healthy, is probably no need to start using one.
  • ANTIOXIDANT SERUM - Since serums tend to be  super-concentrated, nutrient-dense treatments that address specific skincare concerns, it is important to keep them as close to the skin as possible.
  • EYE CREAM - According to Dr. Ourian, it’s very important to apply a good quality eye cream once if not twice a day to maintain the health and thickness of the eyelid skin. Improving the skin quality in this area early on ensures that the eyelid skin does not easily lose laxity and its smooth appearance later on as one ages. “Consistency is very important, ” reiterated Dr. Ourian “regular use of eye cream keeps the eyelid skin more elastic and can often improve or prevent against some fine lines or collagen loss.”
  • SPOT TREATMENT - Another major issue for many is acne and sunspots, and it is critical that prescription medications and acne spot treatments be applied as close to the skin as possible to maximize their benefits. Of course, acne spot treatments can dry out your skin, so one always should apply it only on spots where they are needed.
  • MOISTURIZER - Next, though your body has its own natural lubricating system consisting of glands that secrete oil to help your skin fight against harsh outside conditions, most of us require extra hydration to counter the weather, harsh chemicals and damage caused by the sun’s rays. If however, you are using an acne spot treatment, you may wish to skip those areas when applying your moisturizer in order to make sure the ingredients in it won’t interfere with the active ingredients in your spot treatment.
  • SUNSCREEN - The last step in your daytime routine should involve applying sunscreen.

>> NIGHTTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE

At night, your skin works to naturally repair itself. For this reason, we want to assist it by providing it what it needs to assist in doing so. Here’s the best order of skin care products to make sure you get the most out of them:

  • CLEANSER - In order to eliminate the day’s grime, dirt, oil and makeup, a good cleanser is paramount. If you did wear makeup, you might consider removing your makeup first with a dedicated makeup remover or cleansing oil prior to washing your face with a gentle cleanser. If you are going to use a physical exfoliant, like a facial scrub, you might want to use it in place of your cleanser after removing your makeup.
  • SKINCARE  TONERS/BOOSTERS - If you use a toner, apply it as you would in the morning. At night, some people also like to layer various types of skin care boosters, which you’ll see as either mists, essences, beauty waters or hydrating (hyaluronic acid) serums. These are infused with different active ingredients, but for the most part, the purpose is mainly to hydrate and nourish skin.
  • EYE CREAM - Eye creams are used to help avoid crow’s feet and dark circles, They can also help protect your delicate eye area from your other skin care products. For this reason, you might want to apply your eye cream before your other skincare treatments to help protect your eye area against potent ingredients, which could potentially irritate your skin.
  • SERUMS AND PEELS - As mentioned earlier, your skin does most of its repairing, restoring and regenerating during our sleep. This is why most consider that targeted skin care treatments, such as prescription meds, retinol creams, exfoliating treatments and anti-aging serums are often better used at night.
  • MOISTURIZER OR NIGHT CREAM - While some people choose to use the same moisturizer for day and night, some night moisturizers or night creams are often thicker and heavier and designed to be absorbed over the course of several hours. Maintaining a high water content in the skin is key for healing and maintaining healthy skin. If you are using the right moisturizer, it should be your last step because nothing is going to get through it. If however, your skin is on the dry side, you may even desire to add a face oil before applying your night cream.
