Three Sentences from a Billionaire That Changed My Life and Made Me Millions

After graduating college, I met with my uncle in his Chicago office. I had grown up in Los Angeles and thought he simply wanted to welcome me to the city and share some advice. However, he offered a life-changing perspective.

He said, “It's easier to be poor when you're young than when you're old. When you're poor and young, you can always get by. But, when you're poor and old, no one gives a "&^%" about you!”

The phone then rang, and he had to go into a meeting. I sat there for a while, thinking about it. I always respected him because he started with very little money and became a real estate billionaire 40 years ago, when it was even tougher to do so. So when he said something, I listened.

Shortly after, he walked in and said, “I’m sorry, but I have to go into another meeting, but we can talk more later. Listen, what I just told you will be a blessing or a curse.”

I responded, confused, “What do you mean?”

He continued, “If you work hard now while you're young, you will remember this short conversation as a blessing. You can enter your later years with money, success and a happier, more fulfilled life. But, if you don’t heed my advice, you will remember this conversation as a curse, with sadness about what could have been.”

Wow! I had never really thought about my later life. What would it be like to get older? I mean, I really didn't have much money when I was younger, I didn't need it. But will it matter when I am older? When my health starts to deteriorate, my looks starting to fade, and I am running out of money - perhaps living in an old apartment all alone, worried if Social Security would be enough to support me… so many things I had never considered.

You see, I had always been driven and done well because I had "the secret". I knew what it took to make it - everyone in our family knew, and I can prove it!

My mother won two Golden Globe Awards as the best actress in a dramatic series, my other uncle won 2 Academy Awards as a cinematographer, the other uncle, as mentioned, became a billionaire, and my brother and I both started and sold multi-million-dollar online companies. Winning was easy!
