Lack of Calcium - Signs and Symptoms

Calcium is a very important mineral in the body. It is crucial to the development and maintenance of strong bones, teeth and the immune system. If you are lacking sufficient calcium, your bones will weaken and your teeth will become brittle. In addition, there are degenerative conditions that occur in old age as a result of calcium deficiency. Other conditions like depression, bone disease or osteoporosis, premenstrual syndrome are enhanced by calcium deficiency.

If you are intending to eradicate lack of calcium in your body, you increase calcium intake through nutritional supplements and proper diet. Calcium also aids the growth of nails and hair. The early signs and symptoms of calcium deficiency include brittle nails, frequently occurring muscle cramps and eye twitching and a dry skin. Some of these symptoms are very subtle and are not easily recognizable especially in babies. The most common symptom due to its visibility is the yellowing of the teeth. When calcium deficiency is not corrected it can lead to prolonged depression, blood clotting problems as well as frequent pains in the back.

There are other signs and symptoms of calcium deficiency although they are very rare. They include hypertension, miscarriages, kidney stones, menstrual cramps and sleeplessness. Calcium levels in the body are measured through a blood test. If it has been established through diagnosis that you are suffering from lack of calcium you should immediately start to consume nutritional supplements that are rich in calcium. The most recommended are those made of coral calcium as it is easily absorbed and also aids in preventing the occurrence of most of the aforementioned signs and symptoms of calcium deficiency.

Most calcium supplements are made of calcium citrate, calcium acetate and calcium carbonate. Among these three, calcium carbonate can provide 40% of the basic calcium absorbed by the blood despite being the least soluble. The most beneficial calcium salt of obtained from fossil coral reefs that are found in the Japanese Island of Okinawa. This salt is basically made of calcium carbonate but also contains sodium, magnesium and potassium. It is easily absorbed and also reduces acidity in the stomach. Coral calcium is increasing being used to make calcium supplements of high quality as a result of its long term health benefits and purity. Milk, fish and green leafy vegetables are also rich in calcium.

In order to gain optimal health and also eradicate lack of calcium there is a special formula of natural calcium that is commonly known as Bone Protect. Sufficient levels of calcium are especially necessary for pregnant women as they will pass on a lot of calcium through breast milk and will require replenishing so as to ensure their health as well as the health of suckling babies. Calcium also enhances regular heartbeat and aids in the correct conduction of the nerve impulses. The adequate amount of calcium in the body ranges from 100 mg to 1500 mg in a day depending on your age. This target can be achieved by taking supplements.

Severe cases of calcium deficiency should be handled with the advice and direction of a physician so as to establish their root causes through blood work and other types of tests. In medical terms, hypocalcemia is used to describe the occurrence of low serum in the blood. This is caused by Vitamin D deficiency and acute pancreatitis among many other causes. If the renal system is not functioning properly which can occur if excess phosphates enter into the blood stream which the kidney cannot handle the body excretes the excess phosphates with the stool. This blocks the absorption of calcium leading to hypocalcemia. This mostly occurs in newborns during the first 2 days of life or afterwards between 5 to 10 days of life. In newborns, the condition can be caused by feeding them with child formula which may contain high amounts or levels of phosphates. Low levels of calcium serum may lead to stiffness in the muscles. Hypocalcemia can also lead to prolonged arrhythmia which manifests as a long interval between low and high points exhibited on an electrocardiogram. Other cardiovascular complications that may result are congestive heart failure and low blood pressure.
