Session 5: Why Does God Allow Bad Things to Happen?

Welcome back, everyone. Today we're going to tackle one of the hardest questions anyone can ask about God: If God is good, why does He allow bad things to happen? Why is there cancer, violence, war, addiction, natural disasters, and innocent people suffering? Maybe for you this isn't just a philosophical question. Maybe something terrible happened to you or someone you love, and you've wondered, “God, if You're really there, why did You let this happen?” Christianity doesn't give us an easy answer that suddenly makes suffering okay. Even people with tremendous faith sometimes ask God, “Why?”

Part of the answer begins with free will. Christianity teaches that God created us with the freedom to choose love or hatred, honesty or dishonesty, good or evil. If God forced us to love Him and each other, would that really be love? Real love requires freedom, but freedom also means people can make terrible choices. Wars, violence, betrayal, abuse, and much of the suffering in our world come from what human beings choose to do to one another. But that still doesn't explain disease, accidents, natural disasters, or every tragedy. And here's where we have to be honest: there are things we simply don't understand.

But Christianity makes an extraordinary claim: God didn't remain far away from our suffering. He entered into it. Jesus experienced rejection, betrayal, grief, physical pain, and ultimately death. When His friend Lazarus died, the Bible simply says, “Jesus wept.” — John 11:35. Our pain matters to God. And at the center of Christianity is Jesus hanging on a cross. Christians believe God understands suffering because He experienced it Himself. But the cross wasn't the end of the story. Jesus rose from the dead, showing us that suffering, evil, and even death don't get the final word.

So here's your challenge today. Think about one difficult experience in your life and ask, “What has this taught me, and could something good still come from it?” You may not have an answer yet, and that's okay. Then say an honest prayer: “God, I don't understand everything that has happened. Help me trust You even when I don't understand.” And if someone you know is suffering, reach out and be there for them. Sometimes when we ask, “Where is God when people are hurting?” part of the answer may be that He's asking us to bring His love to them. Next time, we're going to ask an even bigger question: Is God actually real?
