Session 6: Is God Actually Real?

Welcome back, everyone. Today we're going to ask the question underneath almost everything we've been talking about: Is God actually real? Because if God isn't real, Christianity is basically just an interesting collection of ideas. But if God is real, then questions about who He is, why He created us, what He wants from us, and what happens after we die suddenly become incredibly important. Maybe you've always believed in God, maybe you stopped believing, or maybe you're somewhere in the middle thinking, “How could anyone really know?” That's a fair question.

Let's start with something simple: Why is there anything at all? The universe exists. Galaxies, stars, planets, and you exist. Science can tell us an incredible amount about how the universe developed, but there's still a deeper question: Why is there a universe in the first place? When we look at a universe governed by consistent laws of physics and containing the conditions necessary for life, it's reasonable to ask whether all of this points beyond itself to something—or Someone. And science and belief in God don't have to be enemies. Science helps us understand how the natural world works, while faith also asks why anything exists at all.

Then think about yourself. You can love, create, imagine, recognize beauty, sacrifice for someone else, and understand that some things are truly right or wrong. Where do consciousness, meaning, morality, and our desire to search for something greater than ourselves come from? Christianity offers an answer: we were created by God and for God. The Bible says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” — Psalm 19:1. Thousands of years ago, people looked into the night sky and saw evidence of something greater. Today we can see billions of galaxies, and the question has only become bigger.

None of this forces you to believe, and that's the point. Don't believe in God simply because someone tells you to, but don't reject Him simply because someone tells you religion is foolish either. Search for yourself. Here's your challenge today: look up at the sky tonight and think about how enormous the universe is and how incredible it is that you're here able to think about it. Then ask: “Does all of this point to something greater?” And say one simple prayer: “God, if You're really there, help me find You. Show me the truth.” Because if God really exists, there may be no more important discovery you could make in your life. Next time, we're going to ask: Why should anyone believe the Bible?
