Session 14: What Happens When We Die?

Welcome back, everyone. Today we're going to talk about something most people don't really like thinking about: death. When you're young, death can seem incredibly far away. You have relationships, school, work, dreams, places you want to visit, and things you want to accomplish. But eventually every one of us faces the same question: What happens when we die? Maybe you've already thought about it because someone you loved died, and you found yourself wondering, “Where are they now? Is this really the end?”

Christianity makes an extraordinary claim: physical death isn't the end of our existence. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.” — John 11:25. Jesus didn't simply tell people not to fear death. He claimed authority over death itself. Then Christianity says He proved it: Jesus was crucified, died, and rose from the dead. That's why the Resurrection is at the center of Christianity. Christians believe death is real and painful, but it doesn't get the final word.

Christianity teaches that we have souls and that our lives have eternal significance. Our choices matter, how we treat people matters, and our relationship with God matters. Scripture says, “People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” — Hebrews 9:27. Christianity teaches about Heaven—eternal life with God—and also warns about the possibility of eternal separation from Him. Catholics also believe in Purgatory, the final purification of those who die in God's friendship before entering the fullness of Heaven. But these teachings aren't supposed to make us obsessed with death. They're supposed to help us understand how valuable life is.

So here's your challenge today. Imagine looking back at your life from the very end and ask yourself: “Am I becoming the person God created me to be? Am I loving the people in my life? And am I prepared to meet God?” If some of those answers make you uncomfortable, don't panic. Change direction. Ask forgiveness, repair a relationship, begin praying, serve someone, and start following Jesus. Then pray: “Jesus, help me live my life in a way that prepares me for eternity.” Maybe the question “What happens when I die?” should lead us to an even more important question: “How should I live while I'm here?” Next time, we're going to finish this series with one simple challenge: What if you gave Jesus 30 days?
