Why Does God Let Hard Things Happen?
Life’s most painful questions often begin with “Why?” Why does God let us go through trials? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why are there seasons of heartbreak, loss, and suffering? The truth is, God’s Word does not promise us a life free from hardship. In fact, Jesus Himself told us: “In the world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
God allows difficulties not because He is distant, but because He is close, shaping us, refining our faith, and preparing us for our true home in Heaven. These trials remind us that this world is not the end of our story.
Why Hard Things Happen
To Strengthen Our Faith – Just as fire purifies gold, trials refine our character and trust in God. James 1:2-3 tells us to “consider it pure joy… when you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”
To Draw Us Closer to Him – In good times, we can become self-reliant. In hard times, we cling to God like never before. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”
To Prepare Us for Eternity – This life is preparation for eternity. Our struggles keep us mindful that our goal is not earthly comfort but heavenly glory (2 Corinthians 4:17).
Be Vigilant - The Enemy Never Sleeps
We have a spiritual enemy who is relentless. 1 Peter 5:8 warns us: "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
Satan doesn’t take days off. He works to distract, discourage, and destroy. This is why vigilance is not optional - it’s essential. As Christians, we cannot afford spiritual laziness. We must guard our hearts, protect our minds, and keep our eyes on Jesus.
Plan for His Return - and Your Return to Heaven
We plan for vacations, careers, and retirement, yet so many fail to plan for eternity. Jesus said in Matthew 24:44: “You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”
Living ready means walking daily in obedience, repentance, and love, knowing that at any moment, we may see Him face-to-face.
Love Never Sleeps
Jesus commanded: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)
True love for God is not part-time, it’s a constant flame. Even when the world is chaotic, even when we are tired, even when temptation whispers, love compels us to keep going.
How to Stay Strong in Hard Times
Pray daily - not just for your needs but for wisdom and strength.
Read the Bible - let God’s Word anchor you in truth.
Stay connected to the Church - don’t walk alone; we are called to community.
Resist distractions - the enemy uses the noise of media, gossip, and busyness to dull your spirit.
Share your faith - remind others of God’s hope, because love grows when it’s given away.
Finally...
Hard things will happen. But our God is greater than every trial. Our mission is to remain faithful, vigilant, and loving until the day He calls us home.
When the storms rage, remember: the enemy never rests, but neither does God’s love for you. Stay awake, stay ready, and love Him with all your heart, mind, and soul - always.
