What If That Homeless Person Was Jesus in Disguise?
Every day, we walk past people on sidewalks, under bridges, at the edges of city parks - eyes tired, clothes worn, and hearts often invisible to the world. Some of us look away. Some toss change. A few offer a smile or a sandwich. But here’s the question we must all consider: What if it was Jesus?
A Hidden Test of the Heart
Jesus said clearly:
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for Me.” - Matthew 25:40
Think about that. When we pass a hungry man, a barefoot woman, or a mother with a child sleeping in a cardboard shelter - Jesus sees it all. Not just the action, but the heart behind it. What if He’s giving us a chance to pass a test - not of theology, not of money - but of compassion?
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some have entertained angels unawares.” - Hebrews 13:2
What if that unshaven man with a hand-scrawled sign was a divine test, and in our rush or judgment, we failed to recognize the moment?
Why Kindness Matters
We don’t have to solve homelessness to make a difference. We only have to see people with dignity and act with love. Here are simple, powerful ways to help:
Offer food or water instead of just walking by.
Give socks, hygiene kits, or blankets—often more helpful than money.
Make eye contact and say “God bless you” sincerely.
Ask their name and use it. Being seen is a powerful form of healing.
Pray with them if they’re open to it—many long for hope.
Support local shelters or initiatives with time, resources, or advocacy. One excellent organization is Feed My Poor
“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?” - 1 John 3:17
What Would Jesus Say?
At the end of our lives, imagine standing at Heaven’s gate. Jesus turns to you and asks: “I was hungry - did you feed Me? I was homeless - did you shelter Me?” - Matthew 25:35-36 (paraphrased)
Now imagine your answer. Better yet, imagine His smile when you say yes. This isn’t about guilt, it’s about opportunity. Every person in need is a sacred chance to live the Gospel, not just speak it.
A Final Invitation
Start small. Keep granola bars in your car. Pray daily for the homeless in your city. Bring your kids when you give, so they learn that charity is not a chore, it’s a joy. Jesus doesn’t want us to look the other way. He wants us to look through His eyes.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” - Matthew 5:7
So the next time you see someone in need, pause. Smile. Give. Pray. And remember, you may be closer to heaven in that moment than you’ve ever been before.
