To Those Who Walk Past the Hungry and Poor

I watch people each day walk the streets of our cities. I see the poor, the hungry, the cold, and the forgotten ones lying by the wayside - and I see many passing them by.

But remember what Jesus said: “For I was hungry and you gave Me no food, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome Me, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me” (Matthew 25:42–43).

And when people asked Him when they had ever seen Him in need, He answered, Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me” (Matthew 25:44–45).

Think of the story of the Good Samaritan. The priest and the Levite both saw the wounded man and passed by. But the Samaritan, moved with compassion, cared for him as a true neighbor (Luke 10:31–37). Which of these do you think God was pleased with?

The truth is, the poor are not invisible to God. In them, Christ Himself is present. Scripture says, “Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will repay him for his deed” (Proverbs 19:17). Passing them by is not just neglecting a person - it is turning away from the Lord.

Do not harden your heart. Do not cling to comfort while your brother or sister starves in your sight. Jesus asked, “What profit is it to gain the whole world, yet lose your soul?” (Mark 8:36). If we desire to follow Him, we must take up our cross and deny ourselves to serve those in need.

Remember: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy” (Matthew 5:7). On the day of judgment, mercy will matter most, for “judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment” (James 2:13).

So open your eyes. See Christ in the faces of the homeless, the beggar, the sick, and the lonely. Give food, give drink, give clothing, give comfort. In doing so, you do more than save them - you save your own soul.
