The Power of Silence: Making Room to Get Closer to God
A World Full of Noise
We live in a noisy world. Phones buzz, screens compete for our attention, and our minds keep racing from one thing to the next. Even when the room is quiet, our thoughts may still be running.
Silence Makes Room for God
Silence is not empty. It can help us notice what is happening in our hearts - the worries we’ve been carrying, the gratitude we’ve overlooked, and the questions we haven’t made time to face. When we stop filling every moment with noise, we make room to listen.
You Don’t Need the Perfect Words
That doesn’t mean we will always hear a clear answer. Prayer isn’t a formula, and God’s presence doesn’t depend on having a perfect feeling or finding the perfect words. Sometimes getting closer to God begins simply by sitting with Him, honestly and patiently.
Start with Five Quiet Minutes
You could start with five quiet minutes. Put your phone away. Turn off the television and music. Sit somewhere peaceful, take a slow breath, and say a simple prayer: “Lord, I’m here. Help me be present to You.” When your thoughts wander, gently return to the moment. You don’t have to be angry with yourself or give up. Just begin again. Over time, you might find it easier to be still - and more willing to bring God the parts of your life you usually keep buried under busyness.
Let Silence Teach You to Listen
Silence can also change how we treat other people. When we slow down enough to listen - to a friend, a family member, or someone who feels overlooked - we practice patience and love. We may begin to see where we need to forgive, ask forgiveness, or offer help.
Make a Little Room for God Each Day
You don’t have to retreat from everyday life to make room for God. You can begin in your own home, before the day gets busy, or at the end of the evening. A few minutes of quiet can become a small, steady invitation: “God, guide me. Help me love You and the people around me.” The world will keep calling for your attention. Give God a little of it today. Be still, listen, and let silence become a doorway to a closer relationship with Him.
