Session 9: Why Would Jesus Care About Me?

Welcome back, everyone. Last time we talked about who Jesus really was. Today I want to make it personal: Why would Jesus care about me? There are billions of people in the world, so why would God care about your problems, fears, relationships, mistakes, or what happens in your life? Maybe you don't think you're important enough for God to notice. Or maybe you've made mistakes you're ashamed of and wonder, “If God really knows everything about me, why would He want anything to do with me?”

Here's what's amazing about Jesus: He seemed especially interested in people who thought God wouldn't want them. Read the Gospels and you'll find Jesus spending time with the poor, lonely, rejected, sick, and people who had made serious mistakes. One example was Zacchaeus, a tax collector people hated because tax collectors often became wealthy by taking advantage of others. When Jesus came through his town, Zacchaeus climbed a tree just to see Him. Jesus stopped, looked up, and told Zacchaeus He was coming to his house. Out of everyone in the crowd, Jesus noticed the person everyone else rejected. That encounter changed Zacchaeus and the way he lived.

Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” — Mark 2:17. Christianity isn't a club for perfect people. Jesus doesn't wait for you to fix everything before He loves you. His love is what begins changing you. That doesn't mean Jesus approves of everything we do. He calls us to turn away from sin and become better, but He meets us where we are and helps us become who God created us to be.

So here's your challenge today. Think about one thing about yourself that makes you feel difficult to love—a mistake, weakness, insecurity, or something you're struggling with. Instead of hiding it from God, say: “Jesus, You already know everything about me. Help me understand Your love and help me become the person You created me to be.” You don't have to clean up your entire life before approaching God. Start where you are. Christianity isn't the story of perfect people trying to reach God. It's the story of God reaching out to imperfect people—and that includes you. Next time, we're going to talk about something every one of us carries: mistakes, guilt, shame, and regret—and whether we can truly be forgiven.
