Session 6: St. Thomas Aquinas - Faith Seeking Understanding
Welcome Back!
Our journey now brings us to St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the greatest theologians and philosophers of the Middle Ages. Known as the “Angelic Doctor,” Aquinas sought to bring together faith and reason, showing that the truths of God and the truths of human understanding are not in conflict but in harmony.
Why Aquinas’ Lesson Matters
Aquinas believed that faith and reason were like two wings helping the soul rise toward truth. He showed that belief in God was not blind but supported by careful thought, logic, and evidence. For him, philosophy and theology were not separate paths but companions that led to the same destination. This matters today because so many people feel forced to choose between science and religion, between logic and faith. Aquinas reminds us that truth cannot contradict truth - what is true in reason will never conflict with what is true in God.
A Real-World Picture
Aquinas’ masterpiece, the Summa Theologica, is still studied worldwide. In it, he laid out arguments for God’s existence, the purpose of life, and the nature of morality. He influenced not only the Catholic Church but also law, ethics, and education in Western civilization. Yet Aquinas was not only a scholar but a man of prayer. Toward the end of his life, after a mystical experience, he stopped writing, saying that all he had written seemed like “straw” compared to the reality of God. His humility reminds us that knowledge is not an end in itself but a doorway to encounter with the divine.
Humor Break
Trying to separate faith from reason is like trying to cut a pair of scissors in half. You may still have a blade, but you will not be able to cut through anything.
Action Step for You
If you struggle to connect faith and reason, take one question you have about God and explore it with both your heart and your mind. Read, reflect, pray, and do not fear the process of seeking. Aquinas teaches that honest searching brings us closer to truth.
