Session 2: Who Are You When Nobody’s Watching?

Welcome back, everyone. Today I want to ask you a question that sounds simple but can be difficult to answer: Who are you when nobody’s watching? Not who you are on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or Snapchat. Not the person your friends think you are or the person your parents want you to be. Who are you when it’s just you? We live in a world constantly telling us who we should be. Be more attractive. Be successful. Make more money. Get more followers. Have a better body. Be popular. And without realizing it, we can begin measuring our value by how other people react to us.

The problem is that we’re constantly comparing our real lives with everyone else’s highlight reels. Why do they look better than me? Why wasn’t I invited? Why didn't they text me back? Why are they already successful while I'm still trying to figure things out? Eventually, we can become so busy trying to impress everyone else that we lose sight of who we really are.

Christianity offers a completely different way of seeing yourself. The Bible says, “We are God’s handiwork.” — Ephesians 2:10. Think about what that means. You aren't an accident, and your value isn't determined by your followers, appearance, grades, bank account, popularity, or even your mistakes. Your value begins with the fact that God created you. Jesus demonstrated this constantly. He spent time with people others overlooked—the poor, rejected, struggling, and people who had made serious mistakes. He saw the person underneath the labels, and Christianity says He sees you the same way.

That doesn't mean God wants us to stay exactly as we are. Jesus challenges us to grow, forgive, love, serve, resist temptation, and become better. But there's a huge difference between changing because you hate yourself and changing because you're discovering who God created you to become.

So here's your challenge today. Ask yourself: “Who am I trying to impress, and what am I trying to prove?” Then say one simple prayer: “God, help me see myself the way You see me. Show me who You created me to become.” Your life can begin changing when you stop allowing the world to determine what you're worth and start discovering who God says you are. Next time, we're going to talk about something millions of people struggle with every day: anxiety, worry, and fear about the future.
