Session 11: Harriet Tubman - The Road to Freedom
Welcome Back!
Our next legend is Harriet Tubman, known as the “Moses of her people.” Born into slavery, she escaped to freedom and then risked her life again and again to lead others out of bondage through the Underground Railroad. Her courage and faith made her one of the most admired figures in American history.
Why Tubman’s Lesson Matters
Tubman believed freedom was worth any risk. Even after finding safety for herself, she refused to rest while others remained enslaved. She returned repeatedly to the South, guiding family members and strangers to freedom. She famously said, “I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger.” Her lesson is clear: true courage is not only fighting for your own liberation but helping others find theirs. Today, her life challenges us to see that real leadership is selfless and sacrificial.
A Real-World Picture
Tubman personally led around 70 enslaved people to freedom and gave instructions that helped hundreds more. During the Civil War, she worked as a nurse, scout, and spy for the Union Army, even leading an armed raid that freed more than 700 slaves in South Carolina. Despite danger and constant threats, she trusted in God’s protection. She often said she followed the voice of the Lord, and that faith carried her through impossible situations.
Humor Break
Trying to stop Harriet Tubman was like trying to plug a waterfall with your hands. No matter how hard anyone tried, her courage kept breaking through.
