NEW TESTAMENT TRIVIA – PART 5
NEW TESTAMENT TRIVIA – PART 5
Summary (trivia questions follow)
As the Gospel continued to spread beyond Jerusalem, Peter was called to bring the message of Jesus to Gentiles. A Roman centurion named Cornelius received a vision from an angel telling him to send for Peter. At the same time, Peter had a vision that showed God does not consider any people unclean. When Peter arrived at Cornelius’ house, he explained the vision and preached about Jesus. As he spoke, the Holy Spirit fell upon everyone who was listening. Seeing this, Peter baptized Cornelius and his entire household. When Peter returned to Jerusalem, some Jewish believers criticized him for eating with Gentiles, but Peter explained how God had clearly shown that the Gospel was for all people.
Meanwhile, the Church was growing strongly in Antioch, where believers were first called Christians. Barnabas became a key leader there, guiding worship and teaching. Prophets and teachers in the church fasted and prayed together, seeking God’s direction. Through prayer, the Holy Spirit led the church to send out Paul and Barnabas as missionaries. The church laid hands on them and officially sent them out to preach the Gospel.
On their journeys, Paul traveled to many cities. In Pisidian Antioch, he preached in the synagogue, but many rejected his message. Later in Lystra, Paul was stoned and left for dead, but he survived and continued preaching. Timothy later joined Paul and became one of his closest companions. To avoid offense among Jews, Paul circumcised Timothy. While praying one night, Paul received a vision of a man from Macedonia asking for help, leading Paul to travel into Europe.
In Philippi, Paul met a woman named Lydia, a seller of purple cloth. God opened her heart to believe the message, and she and her household were baptized. Paul later cast a demon out of a slave girl who could predict the future. Her owners became angry because they lost income and had Paul arrested. Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into prison. That night, while they sang hymns and prayed, a powerful earthquake shook the prison. The doors opened, and the chains fell off. The jailer thought the prisoners had escaped and was about to kill himself, but Paul stopped him. The jailer asked what he must do to be saved, and he and his entire family were baptized that night.
Paul later traveled to Thessalonica but was forced to flee at night due to opposition. He went to Berea, where the people eagerly examined the Scriptures every day to see if his teaching was true. From there, Paul traveled to Athens and preached to philosophers about the “unknown god.” A man named Dionysius believed his message.
In Ephesus, Paul’s teaching caused a riot. Demetrius, a silversmith who made idols of the goddess Diana, stirred up a crowd because his business was threatened. A town clerk calmed the crowd and restored order. Paul later traveled to Troas, where he preached all night. A young man named Eutychus fell asleep, fell from a window, and died. Paul embraced him and God restored him to life.
Before Paul returned to Jerusalem, the prophet Agabus warned him that he would be imprisoned. Paul was later arrested and put on trial before Roman governors Felix and Festus and before King Agrippa. When Paul shared his testimony, Agrippa famously said, “Almost you persuade me to become a Christian.” Paul appealed to Caesar and was sent to Rome for trial.
