NEW TESTAMENT TRIVIA – PART 2

NEW TESTAMENT TRIVIA – PART 2

Summary (trivia questions follow)
After Judas betrayed Jesus and died, the apostles needed to replace him. They prayed and chose Matthias to take Judas’ place among the Twelve. As the early Church grew, many miracles happened through the apostles. One day, a lame man was healed at the temple gate when Peter commanded him to walk in the name of Jesus. The first Christian martyr, Stephen, boldly preached about Christ and was stoned to death. Saul, who would later become Paul, witnessed Stephen’s death and approved of the persecution.

As the Gospel spread, believers were first called Christians in the city of Antioch. Philip traveled and preached to an Ethiopian official, who believed and was baptized. Meanwhile, Peter had a powerful vision of a sheet filled with animals, showing him that God accepts Gentiles. This vision prepared him to visit Cornelius, a Roman centurion who later converted to Christianity.

During Paul’s missionary journeys, he encountered a sorcerer named Elymas who opposed the Gospel. Elymas was struck blind as a sign of God’s power. Paul and Silas later traveled to Philippi, where they were unjustly arrested and thrown into prison. While they prayed and sang hymns, a great earthquake shook the prison, opening the doors and loosening the chains. The jailer feared the prisoners had escaped, but Paul stopped him from harming himself. The jailer then asked, “What must I do to be saved?” and he and his household were baptized.

Paul continued preaching across many cities. In Athens, he spoke to philosophers and referenced an altar dedicated to an “unknown god,” explaining that this unknown God was the Creator. A man named Dionysius believed Paul’s message. In Ephesus, a riot broke out because idol-makers feared losing business. Demetrius, a silversmith who made statues of Artemis, stirred up the crowd. Eventually, a town official calmed the people.

Later, in Troas, Paul preached late into the night. A young man named Eutychus fell from a window and died, but Paul prayed and raised him back to life. A prophet named Agabus later warned Paul that he would be imprisoned if he continued toward Jerusalem. Paul was eventually arrested and put on trial before Roman leaders, including Felix, Festus, and King Agrippa. When Paul defended his faith, Agrippa famously said, “Almost you persuade me to become a Christian.”

Paul appealed to Caesar and was sent to Rome. On the journey, a violent storm caused a shipwreck on the island of Malta. While gathering firewood, Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake, but he was unharmed, astonishing the islanders. The chief official of the island, Publius, welcomed Paul and his companions.

The New Testament also includes letters written to guide believers. The author of Hebrews is unknown, though many have speculated. The book of Hebrews emphasizes faith. James, the brother of Jesus, wrote the letter of James, teaching that faith must be shown through actions. Jude warned believers about false teachers. Peter wrote letters to encourage Christians who were suffering. John wrote about love and obedience, teaching that love covers many sins.
