Music, Movies, and Your Soul
You probably don’t think twice about hitting play on a playlist or binge-watching a show. Music and movies are part of life, especially as a teenager. They set the vibe, fill the silence, hype you up, or help you escape. But have you ever stopped to think: What is this doing to my soul?

Now, this isn’t one of those “burn all your secular music” speeches. But it is a call to wake up. Because the stuff you consume shapes you - whether you realize it or not.
Jesus said, “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light” (Matthew 6:22). That means what you watch, listen to, and take in has a real impact on what’s going on inside of you - your thoughts, emotions, even your desires.
Let’s talk music. Lyrics matter. Are they celebrating real love - or reducing it to lust? Are they lifting you up - or dragging you into darkness? The same goes for shows and movies. What you watch rewires your mind. Constant exposure to violence, toxic dating, or crude jokes doesn’t leave you untouched. Over time, it numbs you.
You don’t need to only listen to worship music or watch Christian movies - but you do need to be intentional. Ask yourself:
Does this glorify God or mock Him?
Does this lead me closer to love, beauty, and truth - or farther from it?
How do I feel afterward - uplifted or empty?
Your soul is worth protecting. And the beautiful thing is, there’s incredible art out there that’s inspiring, fun, and clean. Want to know something amazing? The early Christians used art, music, and drama to convert entire cultures. Imagine using today’s media the same way.
So next time you hit play - ask: Is this helping me become more like Christ? If not, maybe it’s time to change the soundtrack.
