Managing Life Transitions
Life transitions, such as moving to a new city, changing jobs, having children, or experiencing a loss, can place a great deal of stress on a relationship. These transitions often lead to feelings of uncertainty, anxiety, or imbalance in the relationship dynamic.

Therapist Dr. John Gottman notes that “couples who navigate life transitions successfully are those who continue to communicate openly and maintain emotional support for each other.”
In therapy, couples learn to navigate these transitions by focusing on communication and adaptability. Life changes can sometimes shift the roles and responsibilities within the relationship, and partners may struggle to adjust.
For example, having a child can change how partners prioritize each other, with more attention going to the baby. Therapy helps couples address these shifts and maintain their connection amid the changes.
Another common issue during life transitions is stress management. One partner may feel overwhelmed by the changes, while the other feels neglected or unsure how to help. Therapists guide couples in managing stress together, often by teaching relaxation techniques or encouraging activities that reduce anxiety, such as mindfulness or exercise.
Therapists also emphasize the importance of setting new goals as a couple during life transitions.
Dr. Sue Johnson explains, “In times of change, couples need to create a shared sense of purpose, a vision for how they’ll move forward together.” This might involve discussing how to balance new responsibilities, support each other’s individual growth, or maintain emotional intimacy during a challenging period.
Ultimately, managing life transitions requires open communication, flexibility, and a commitment to supporting each other through change. Therapy provides a safe space for couples to explore their feelings about these transitions and develop strategies to navigate them together.
