Friendships That Last (and Ones That Don’t)

Friendship is one of the most powerful forces in your life. Your friends can build you up or tear you down. They can lead you closer to God - or pull you farther from Him. The people you surround yourself with will shape who you become more than you realize.

As a teen, it’s natural to crave acceptance. Everyone wants a place to belong. But not all friendships are created equal. Some are built on trust, encouragement, and shared values. Others are built on convenience, drama, or even fear of being alone.

So how do you know if a friendship is healthy, holy, and worth investing in?

Friendships that last:

  1. They challenge you to be better.

  2. They respect your values.

  3. They show up.

  4. They love you as you are - but don’t let you stay there.

Friendships that fade (or should):

  1. Some are seasonal.

  2. Some are toxic.

  3. Some end when you change.

Jesus Himself had close friends - Peter, John, Mary Magdalene. He also walked away from those who rejected His mission.

Your friends matter. Proverbs 13:20 says, “Walk with the wise and become wise, but the companion of fools suffers harm.” Choose wisely. Love everyone, but be intentional about who gets access to your heart.

The best friendships don’t just make you feel good. They make you holy.
