Demons Are Real - Here’s How They Attack and What You Can Do!

As Catholics, we don’t live in fear, but we must live aware. Demons are real. Spiritual warfare is not just the stuff of horror films or ancient legends, it’s happening every day in hearts, homes, and even parishes. And the Church, rooted in Scripture and centuries of wisdom, has provided both the truth and the tools to stand firm.

How Do Demons Attack?

Demons are fallen angels, once glorious beings who rebelled against God. While they are already defeated through Christ’s victory on the Cross, they still seek to lead souls away from salvation through various forms of temptation, deception, and oppression. Attacks may manifest in several ways:

  • Temptation: Subtle urges to sin, especially pride, lust, anger, despair, and addiction.

  • Division: Discord within families, communities, and relationships, especially in marriages.

  • Obsession: Constant intrusive thoughts, fears, or unhealthy attachments to people or things.

  • Oppression: Physical symptoms with no medical explanation, overwhelming fatigue, or depression.

  • Possession (rare): Complete control of the body by a demon, requiring formal exorcism.

“Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
- 1 Peter 5:8

But take heart, God is infinitely more powerful, and through Jesus Christ, we are given the authority to resist evil.

What Can You Do?

  1. Stay in a State of Grace - Regular confession, Mass, and daily prayer are essential. Demons flee from the soul united with God.

  2. Renounce Sin - Close the doors that demons love to enter through: occult activity, pornography, unforgiveness, and bitterness.

  3. Use the Sacramentals - Holy water, blessed crucifixes, medals (especially St. Benedict), and the Rosary are powerful spiritual weapons.

  4. Invoke the Name of Jesus - There is no greater name. Say it aloud. Declare it when tempted. Evil cannot stand it.

  5. Pray Binding Prayers - Binding prayers are powerful spiritual tools in which you, as a baptized Catholic, invoke the authority of Christ to “bind” evil spirits and command them to depart. One popular version, attributed to Fr. Ripperger, begins:

“In the name of Jesus Christ, I bind all spirits not of the Holy Spirit. I bind the spirit of fear, anxiety, confusion, addiction, lust... and I send you to the foot of the Cross for Jesus to deal with you as He wills.”

These prayers are not exorcisms, which only priests can perform, but they are powerful deliverance prayers for the laity.

  6. Pray the Rosary Daily - As St. Padre Pio said, “The Rosary is the weapon for these times.” Mary crushes the head of the serpent.

  7. Surround Yourself with Holy Things - Read Scripture. Watch uplifting Catholic videos. Play sacred music. Fill your life with light, and darkness cannot stay.

Remember: You Are Not Alone

You are not crazy. If you are experiencing spiritual heaviness, torment, confusion, or patterns of destruction, it may be a spiritual attack. Reach out to a faithful Catholic priest. Ask for prayer. And do not isolate.

“Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
- James 4:7

Final Encouragement

Demons want you to believe you are powerless, but you are not. You have the authority of a child of God. The blood of Christ covers you. The Church surrounds you. The angels defend you. And through Jesus, you are already victorious.
