I’ve spent the past 25 years learning and teaching the importance and shape of a modern journey to an ancient spirituality. During my study and preparation for ordination, two things happened: I met an Eastern, Hebrew Jesus who changed absolutely everything I thought I knew about spirituality, and I met a group of recovering addicts and alcoholics who changed absolutely everything I thought I knew about ministry.
Combining the concrete, relational spirituality of a Hebrew Jesus with the concrete, contemplative practice of Christian tradition cleared the way to begin helping others engage in their own religious or non-religious process of changing absolutely everything in their personal and professional lives.
As a pastor, spiritual director, certified counselor, and speaker, I’m co-founder and teaching pastor at theeffect faith community and recovery ministry in San Clemente, CA as well as executive director of Encompass Recovery, an addiction treatment center in San Juan Capistrano. And with a BA in English Lit/Writing and a Masters in Divinity, I’ve authored two books on the subject of a modern Westerner’s journey to the Hebrew heart and roots of Christianity.
A varied background—from entering a Catholic monastic order to pursuing a career in music, teaching primary education, directing corporate communications, partnering in a startup marketing design group, heading up an international humanitarian organization while also leading worship and preparing for ordination in an Evangelical church setting—all fits now and contributes to the impact of a message that is the way to the meaning and sense of identity we all need as people for balance in our relationships and purpose in our work.
My wife Marian and I are relatively new residents of San Clemente, California, living with the two of our four children still at home, two dogs, a cat, and a flock of wild birds in the back yard.
