Call it coaching, consulting, training, whatever you like. Our job is really quite simple to explain, and not so simple to do at a high level. It's perhaps best explained in analogy form. . .
Pretend for a minute that you are sitting in your living room, your phone rings, the caller asks you how they can get to your house. Assuming you want them to get there, what is the first thing you have to ask them? "Where are you now?" If they aren't really sure you ask them "How did you get there?" Once you know where they are and how they got there you can help them right?
Now fast forward a bit and you find them sitting in your living room, they tell you they want to go on vacation and ask you how to get there. What do you now have to ask? "Where do you want to go?" Assuming they aren't certain do you need to ask them questions to learn what it is they are hoping to do or accomplish on vacation? "Why do you really want to go there?"
Once you know where they are, how they got there, where they want to go and why . . . can you give them directions? Perhaps, and this is where most coaches, trainers, or consultants miss the boat. They now tell someone how to get where they want to go. It will work, and is possible, but with 6.5 Billion people in the world, is there one RIGHT way for everyone? Instead of thinking we know what is best for you, we will ask even more questions, "How quickly do you want to get there?" "What resources do you have available for the journey?" "What things do you want to enjoy and/or avoid along the way?" Once you and they have figured out the best way FOR THEM to get there, now you can create the best path with them, for them to get to where they want to go. Are you done now? Not if you are truly committed to helping them! As humans we tend to grow astray, having someone keeping us on track and focused will significantly increase the likelihood we reach our destination.
