Unlimited calls throughout the United States for $19 a year? Now you are probably thinking that this is a "Typo" and we meant a month right? Nope. We received a call from TV and Film actress Linda Cristal (best known as "Victoria" from the western series "The High Chaparral"). She mentionedthat there was a product being offered in some late night informercial that allowed anyone to place and receive unlimited calls throughout the United States for only $19 a year. It's name Magicjack (www.MagicJack.com). So, we asked our SmartGuy staff to verify it. Well, its true. Apparently, you plug a standard phone into this device, and then the device into your computer (the software is preloaded) and within just a few minutes you have your very own local phone number and can place and receive calls. You do not need a phone line.
It is similar to the popular services such as Vonage, but without the extra features, equipment, (or extra cost!). We tested it out several times over a 7 day period and the quality was very good. One time we did hear some echos. However, it is important to note that you should have a fast connection as you are calling through your internet service.
I believe there is a minimal start-up fee, but they waived the first $19 year charge. So thanks Linda!
