Learn Everything About Proctology Doctors

SmartGuy.com

If you have never heard of, or been to a proctologist, this article will help you learn everything about proctology doctors. A proctologist, otherwise known as a colorectal surgeon, is a medical doctor that focuses specifically on maladies of the colon, anus, and rectum. This term is actually derived from two Greek terms, proktos, which means in the back, and logy, which simply means to study. A proctologist is well versed with many medical conditions, because he or she receives a lot of referrals and works with urologists to excretory systems in both men and women.

If you want to become a proctologist, you have to follow educational and legal steps to become trained and certified and practice. The first step is to secure a bachelors degree. Most reputable medical schools expect a bachelors degree in biology, chemistry, or some other life science along with minimal liberal arts classes to round out ones education. Just before or shortly thereafter, one must go to medical school. Medical school takes four years and gives the student a combination of theory and application in both general and specific courses related to a medical course of study. In this case, it would be in learning about the anus, rectum, and intestines. Specifically, each medical student learns everything he or she needs to know. Once medical school is completed, medical school graduates must complete a proctology residency process. This takes approximately three years, and enables a new graduate to learn from more experienced doctors for a general, internal medicine residency. However, since the new doctor is looking to become a proctologist, which is a specialty, he or she must complete an additional residency. A residency normally takes two years and enables the person wanting to specialize in proctology to become experienced enough to take the licensing exam administered by the government and medical authorities. There is also a proctology fellowship that doctor can take, if they wish to further specialize in their craft. The final step in becoming a licensed and legally practicing proctologist is to become board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which enables one to procure a license from ones individual state and become a proctology doctor.

When running your business in practice, and applying what you have learned from your proctology residency and proctology fellowship, a proctologist is trained to take care of the following maladies in the colon and rectum: rectal tumors, perianal warts, cutting hemorrhoids and constipation, and anal fissures. A proctologist can help oversee colon cancer screenings and other preventative treatments related to the small and large intestines, along with the anus and rectum. His or her job is to speak with a primary care physician and take over for this particular specialty. The proctologist is also a counselor when he or she speaks with the patient to determine what the patient is having issues with, along with the primary care physicians notes. He or she also should have good analytical skills to combine the information from the physicians notes and the response from the patient.

Like most specialized medical doctors, proctology doctors make a decent amount of money when they are in full either practice or work for another practice or a hospital. Reports show that the annual salary for this specialty ranges anywhere from more than $150,000 to nearly $300,000 per year. In addition to ones base salary, many good and generous fringe benefits include paid time off, health and dental benefits, and retirement options for proctology doctors.
