Broken Tooth Treatment And Repair

There are a lot of ways that someone can end up with a broken tooth. Certain sports, such as hockey, are notorious for resulting in broken teeth. However, something as innocuous as crunching on ice or biting a piece of hard candy can cause a tooth to break. The hardest tissue in the body is tooth enamel. However, it has its limits. A tooth that has been previously weakened by tooth decay can be particularly susceptible to breakage. Although unsightly and uncomfortable, broken teeth are not a cause for panic. Dentists have many options for fixing broken teeth and restoring your once beautiful smile.

Whenever your tooth is broken, you need to go to your dentist as soon as possible. If you dont, the tooth can either become further damaged or even infected, causing more serious problems. While waiting to see your dentist, there are several steps you can take to protect the damaged tooth from infection and more damage. Acetaminophen will help reduce the main associated with the broken tooth. Rinsing with salt water will offer additional relief and help stave off a broken tooth infection by killing harmful bacteria. If there is a sharp or jagged edge due to the break, you can cover it with chewing gum or wax to keep it from cutting your tongue or the inside of your mouth. If you need to eat before you can see the dentist, stick with soft foods and avoid the broken tooth.

A broken tooth repair is considered a dental emergency, so getting an appointment should not be too difficult. There are no home remedies for fixing broken teeth. Only a dentist can do that. If your tooth has been knocked completely out of your mouth, time is of the essence. You have 30 minutes during with a tooth repair is most likely to succeed.

Some simple first aid tips can greatly increase the chances that your tooth can be repaired when you get to the dentists office. Make sure to save the pieces, as the dentist might be able to cement them back together. If the tooth is intact, put it back into place as soon as possible. You will need to rinse the tooth under warm running water while holding it by the crown. Do not touch or scrub the roots. Next, place it back into place. Bite down gently on a piece of cause or a wet tea bag to ease the tooth into place and hold it there during the ride to the dentists office.

If the tooth wont fit back in to place, or is just too uncomfortable, it is important to keep the tooth moist. Putting it in a container with saliva or milk is best. Tap water can work, but the chlorine in the water can damage the root. You can also simply hold the tooth in the mouth under the tongue or lower lip.

It is also important to clean the mouth. Dentists recommend rinsing the mouth with warm salt water. Applying gauze for ten minutes can stop the bleeding. And, a cold compress applied to the mouth or cheek over the tooth will reduce swelling. If you cant get to the dentist right away, protect the inside of the mouth by applying temporary dental cement that you can get from a pharmacy.

A broken tooth is a serious condition. Not treating it properly can result in infection and the loss of one or more of your teeth. Getting to the dentist as soon as possible is important. Time lost can mean tooth lost. Knowing how to protect the injured tooth is important in raising the chances that your tooth can be successfully repaired.
